Generally there are three stages to the walk: releasing
on the way in, receiving in the center and returning; that is, taking
back out into the world that which you have received.
The labyrinth is a single path. There is only one path in,
and the same path out. This means you may meet people coming in the other
direction.
It's perfectly all right to pass someone if you want to
go at a faster pace. Just step into the next path as you pass and then
return to the path you were on.
We encourage you to walk in silence. Talking takes
people out of themselves, defeating the reflective purpose.
You may want to take a question into the labyrinth with
you. Take a few moments to reflect before you enter to create a question
that holds possibilities for you.
If you are with a group of people, you may want to move
together in a spiral "dance." Or you can all walk meditatively
in a single file, or each go at his or her own pace.
Before you start, quiet your mind and become aware of your
breath. Relax and mentally dedicate this time to your meditation. Allow
yourself to find the pace your body wants to go.
Stand still for a moment at the opening of the labyrinth
and take a deep breath. Quiet your mind and release the burdens of life.
As you begin walking the labyrinth, focus on the path and stay centered
in your body.
When you get to the center of the labyrinth, stay there
for awhile if you wish. This is the time to quiet your mind and just listen.
Notice any sensations in your body. Are there any changes in your awareness
of your self, time, or surroundings?
Pause a moment at the end to bring closure to your
meditation. After walking, reflect back on your experience: What did you
learn, hear, feel and see?
